Our Story

Built in Brockton. Run by the kids it raised.

Smashmouth grew out of a Brockton tradition — a free summer wrestling clinic, started by longtime Brockton High coach Jim Maher, that handed local kids a mat, a mentor, and a way forward. Two of those kids, Mark Mendes and Deshawn Fentress, wrestled their way to college and came back to run it.

Today the club carries that forward as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit — training stays free for every family, and 20 to 40 young wrestlers fill the room each session from across the region. Collegiate and championship wrestlers give back here too, including two-time NCAA Division III national champion Kenny Anderson and coaches from Bridgewater State University.

"It gives the kids a good place to learn a little bit of discipline, hopefully get into school, and use this for a steppingstone in life."
